| US statesman, born in Mission, Texas, USA. He studied law at Texas University, Austin, and served as a combat pilot during World War 2. He was a member of the US House of Representatives (1948–54), then built up a substantial fortune as president of the Lincoln Consolidated insurance company in Houston. He returned to Congress as a senator for Texas in 1971, and was vice-presidential running-mate to Michael Dukakis in the Democrats' 1988 presidential challenge. In Bill Clinton's administration he served as secretary to the treasury (1993–4). |
