| biography:
| US public official and mayor, born in Itta Bena, Mississippi, USA. He studied at LeMoyne College (BA) and Fiske University (MA), and in 1968 was co-founder and director of Pride Economic Enterprises. A member of the Washington, DC school board (1971–4) and city councillor (1974–8), he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1980. While serving as Mayor of Washington, DC (1980–91), he was convicted of cocaine use and sentenced to prison. Upon his release (1992), he won a seat on the Washington City Council and was later re-elected mayor (1995). |
