| biography:
| Television producer and executive, born in Forest Hills, New York, USA. After working for the National Broadcasting Company (NBC), he joined ABC (1960), creating Wide World of Sports (1961). He went on to revolutionize sports coverage as president of ABC Sports (1968–86), outbidding the other networks to present Monday night football and the Olympics in 1968, 1972, and 1976. Becoming ABC News president (1977), he raided NBC for David Brinkley and CBS for Diane Sawyer. He insured ABC's dominance in news reporting on television by making Ted Koppel Nightline host (1979) and Peter Jennings World News Tonight presenter (1983). Although he relinquished the presidency of ABC Sports in 1986, he was producer for the 1988 Olympics. |
