| Dutch Liberal politician and lawyer, born in The Hague, W Netherlands. A member of the Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie (VVD), from 1974 he was director of the Prof. Mr. Telderstichting (the academic office of the VVD). In 1979 he joined the Ministry of Internal Affairs, becoming its secretary-general from 1985. In 1994 he became minister of agriculture, fisheries, and the environment in the Kok cabinet, and in 1998 was appointed minister of foreign affairs. |
