| Polish politician and prime minister (1947–52, 1954–70), born in Tarnów, S Poland. He studied in Kraków, where he became secretary of the Socialist Party in 1935. He was taken prisoner by the Germans in 1939, escaped, and organized resistance, but was recaptured and sent to Auschwitz in 1941. He became secretary-general of the Socialist Party in 1945, prime minister on two occasions, and chairman of the Council of State (1970–2). |
