| Greeting card manufacturer, born in David City, Nebraska, USA. A teenage entrepreneur, he was soon selling his ‘Hallmark’ brand greeting cards nationwide from his Kansas City headquarters. Hallmark pioneered independent display racks, special-occasion cards, and decorative gift wrap, and by 1953 was the largest greeting-card company in the world. With a reputation for running one of the firms in the USA most favourable to employees, he retired as Hallmark's president and chief executive officer in 1966. |
