| Novelist and essayist, born in Lockport, New York, USA. She studied at Syracuse University and at the University of Wisconsin, taught English at Detroit (1961–7), then became professor of English at Windsor, Ontario. Her first novel was With Shuddering Fall (1964), and Them (1969), her fourth novel, won a National Book award. Later books include Marya: A Life (1986), We Were the Mulvaneys (1996), Broke Heart Blues (1999), and Middle Age: A Romance (2001). She has published poetry, essays, and criticism, and her short-story collections include The Wheel of Love (1970) and Raven's Wing (1987). |
