biography: Animated-cartoon producer, born in Watford, Hertfordshire, SE England, UK. A fashion artist for Harper's Bazaar, she tried her hand at animation with Robin Hood (1935), and in 1941 married fellow-producer John Halas, to form the Halas–Batchelor animation unit. They made the first British feature-length cartoon, Handling Ships, in 1945, and the Charley series (1947). Other films included Orwell's Animal Farm (1954) and the television series Tales of Hoffnung (1965).
