| Potter, born in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, C England, UK. After working as a china retailer in London, he inherited the pottery founded c.1770 by his father, Josiah Spode (1733–97). The business flourished under his direction, and was renowned for transfer-printed earthenware, stoneware, and superbly decorated bone-china. In 1806 he was appointed potter to the Prince of Wales. In 1833 the factory was acquired by William Taylor Copeland and Thomas Garrett, and in c.1845 it introduced Parian porcelain figures, which resembled marble. |
