| Geologist, born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA. He was mining engineer to the Sultan of Turkey (1901), geologist in the US geological survey (1902), and eventually professor of geology at Rollins College (1930–2). As a result of his work, the age of the Tertiary period has been estimated at 45 to 60 million years. His explorations in Alaska (1896, 1898) were commemorated by the naming of Mt Spurr. He also did considerable research on lunar topography and geology. |
