| biography:
| Biblical character, king of Judah (c.639–609 BC), a favourite of the Deuteronomistic historians because of his religious reforms (2 Kings 22–3, 2 Chron 34–5), allegedly based on the discovery of ‘the book of the law’ in the 18th year of his reign. He is credited with destroying pagan cults and attempting to centralize worship in Jerusalem and the Temple. He died in battle against the Egyptians at Megiddo. |
