| Linguist, born in Rochdale, Lancashire, NW England, UK. He was educated in England at the universities of Manchester and Cambridge before becoming chairman of the department of comparative philology (1926–51) and a member of the linguistics department (1951–63) at Harvard. He was an influential editor of Harvard Studies in Classical Philology (1932–4; 1941–8) whose many publications included Foundations of Roman Italy (1937) and Dialects of Ancient Gaul (1970). |
