| Shipbuilder and naval architect, born in Delaware Co, Pennsylvania, USA. Congress named him to refit eight merchant vessels as the first Continental naval vessels (1775). He was the first naval constructor (1794–1801), and designed five of the first six United States frigates. He personally supervised the building of the USS United States, launched in 1797. |
