| Physicist, born in Straubing, SE Germany. In 1807 he founded an optical institute at Munich, where he improved prisms and telescopes, enabling him to discover the dark lines in the Sun's spectrum which have been named after him. He also pioneered the use of diffraction gratings to examine spectra. In 1823 he became professor and academician at Munich. |
