| Dutch Catholic politician and lawyer, born in Breda, S Netherlands. He entered parliament in 1917, and became chairman of the Lower House (from 1929), minister of justice (1933–7), minister of state (1951), and member of the Council of State (1951–7). In 1952–4 he chaired the committee revising the Constitution, and advised Drees at the Round Table Conference on Suriname and the Antibes, for which he had himself done the preparatory work. |
