| biography:
| Poet and writer, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Influenced by Bilderdijk, he was passionate about the emancipation of the Catholics and about esthetics. He founded the magazine De Dietsche Warande (1855), aimed at a revival of Catholic culture, and was editor of the Volksalmanak voor Nederlandse katholieken (Almanac for Dutch Catholics). In addition to poetry, he wrote prose in several magazines under his pseudonym. His daughter Catharina and son Karel (Lodewijk van Deyssel) wrote a study about his life and works. |
