| Colonist, born in England, UK. He was the agent and storekeeper for the new settlement at Albemarle Point, South Carolina, USA. He became governor in 1671 and led the fledgling colony through a year of scarcity. After a brief interruption, he served again as governor (1674–82), and the centre of the colony was moved to New Charles Town (present-day Charleston). |
