| biography:
| Explorer, born in Penpont, Dumfries and Galloway, SW Scotland, UK. He studied geology at Edinburgh University and joined the Royal Geographical Society African Expedition (1878–9), taking charge on the death of the leader. He was the first European to reach L Nyasa (Malawi) from the N, and went on to L Tanganyika, which he described in To the Central African Lakes and Back (1881). An invitation from the Royal Geographical Society in 1882 to find a route through hostile Masai country from the coast via Mt Kilimanjaro to L Victoria led to his discovery of L Baringo and Mt Elgon. His careful notes greatly added to the geographical knowledge of East Africa. He also explored Sokoto in NW Nigeria (1885), and the Upper Congo (1890). |
