| biography:
| Biochemist, born in Czestochowa, Poland. He went to the USA in 1923 and became an assistant in biochemistry at Columbia University (1933–4). He moved to Rockefeller University (1934–45) and then joined Yale (1945–82). He made major advances in studies of proteolytic enzymes for over 30 years, and in the late 1960s he devoted his time to writing and lecturing on the history of science. |
