| Painter, born in Montpellier, S France. He studied in Rome under de Troy (1743–50) and later became director of the French Academy in Rome (1775–81). He achieved great success as one of the chief founders of the Neoclassical movement, and was the most important teacher of his time, his best-known pupil being Jacques-Louis David. His works include ‘Saint Louis et Marguerite de Provence visitent Saint Thibaud’, commissioned by Louis XV, to be hung in the Chapel of the Trianon. |
