| biography:
| Dutch politician, prime minister (1965–6), and lawyer, born in Roermond, SE Netherlands. He practised law from 1941 and entered parliament as Katholieke Volkspartij (KVP) member in 1948. Minister of education, arts, and sciences (1952–63), he was responsible for the complete reorganization of secondary education (Mammoetwet) in 1963. He was briefly prime minister (1965–6) and minister of state (1966), and in 1967 was co-chairman of the commission on revising the constitution and suffrage. |
