| US governor and legislator, born in Buncombe Co, North Carolina, USA. A farmer and merchant in Indiana, he emerged a hero from the Mexican War and was appointed first territorial governor of Oregon (1848–50). He was a member of the House of Representatives (Democrat, Oregon, 1851–9) and the Senate (1859–61). In 1860 he ran for vice-president as a Democratic that favoured secession, thus ending his public career. |
