| Astronomer, born in Bourg-en-Bresse, E France. In 1751 he was sent to Berlin by the French Academy to determine the Moon's parallax. From 1762 he was professor of Astronomy in the Collège de France, and later became director of the Paris Observatory. His chief work is Traité d'astronomie (1764), and he also produced the most comprehensive star catalogue of his time (1801). |
