| Marine aviator and governor, born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, USA. He led the marine Fighting Squadron 121, known as ‘Joe's Flying Circus’, on Guadalcanal I during heavy fighting there in 1942, and shot down a total of 26 Japanese aircraft. He later served as governor of South Dakota (1955–9). |
