| US senator, born at Guffey's Landing, Pennsylvania, USA. Entering the family business, he became president of several oil companies. A strong supporter of Woodrow Wilson, he financed Wilson's 1919 national speaking tour. Elected to the US Senate (Democrat, Pennsylvania, 1935–47), he backed New Deal legislation and measures regulating the oil and coal industries, but he practised machine politics when it came to the Democratic party in his home state. |
