| Roman Catholic clergyman, born in Baden, NC Germany. His family emigrated to the USA when he was six. He served in New York before becoming Bishop of Omaha (1928) and Archbishop of New Orleans (1935–62). He became best known for his stand in the 1950s against racial segregation in school, eventually desegregating all Catholic schools in the New Orleans archdiocese. |
