| Criminologist and sociologist, born in New York City, New York, USA. Executive secretary of the National Committee on Segregation in the Nation's Capitol (1946–8), he served on corrections and parole committees in Illinois, and was sheriff of Cook Co, IL (1954–8). Teaching longest at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was dean of the School of Criminology (1961–8), he was consultant to foundations on crime and delinquency, wrote numerous books, and appeared on several television series about delinquency and penitentiaries. |
