| Explorer and soldier, born in New York City, New York, USA. He commanded an exploration of the Colorado R (1857–8) and wrote a classic description of that area. He was the engineer and architect of the Washington National Monument (1859–60) and he served as an engineer and aide in the Confederate army (1861–5). |
