| Financier and revolutionary, born in Montpellier, S France. During the Revolution he was a member of the Legislative Assembly and the Convention (1792), and although a moderate, he voted for the king's death. As head of the committee on finance (1793–95), he produced the ‘Great Book of the Public Debt’ in an attempt to stabilize the finances. He was banished as a regicide in 1815. |
