| King of Naples and Sicily (1806–8) and of Spain (1808–13), born in Corte, Corsica, the eldest surviving brother of Napoleon I. He served Napoleon on diplomatic missions and was a humane sovereign in S Italy, but faced continuous rebellion as a nominated ruler in Spain, where his army was decisively defeated by Wellington at Vittoria (1813). He spent much of his life in exile in New Jersey, but settled in Florence for the last years of his life. |
