| Australian statesman and prime minister (1945–9), born in Bathurst, New South Wales, SE Australia. In early life an engine driver, he entered parliament in 1928, and became defence minister in 1929. As Labor prime minister, he expanded social services and reformed the banking system. He continued as leader of the Labor Party until his death. |
