| Australian statesman and prime minister (1932–9), born in Stanley, Tasmania, Australia. He studied at Tasmania University, became a teacher, entered politics in 1909 as Labor member in the Tasmanian House of Assembly, held the post of minister of education and railways (1914–16), and was premier (1923–9). In the federal parliament he became postmaster-general, minister of public works, and treasurer. In 1931 he broke away and founded and led an Opposition party, the United Australian Party. As prime minister he saw the country's economic recovery after the years of the Depression. |
