| biography:
| Catalan novelist and playwright, born in Figueras, Girona, NE Spain. A socialist by conviction, he is a master of the acid rural novel born of social frustration and disillusion. His masterpiece is La vida i la mort d'En Jordi Fraginals (1912), which Unamuno described as ‘novela, toda una novela, no más que una novela’, epitomizing the notion of the ‘tragic sense of life’ in the eventual destruction of the self-willed ‘hero’. Among other novels are Per la vida (1900) and Quan se fa nosa (1903). His plays include Papallones (1920), Primera volada (1921), Maria Lluisa i els seus pretendents (1928), Vivim a les palpentes (1930), and a farce Quan passava la tragedia (1920). |
