| biography:
| Painter and etcher, born in Játiva, E Spain. He settled in Naples, and became court painter there. He is noted for the often gruesome realism with which he treated religious and mythological subjects, such as the martyrdom of the saints, as well as portraits, such as ‘Portrait of a Bearded Woman’ (1631, Spain). Later works were calmer and more subtle, and include his paintings of the Passion. |
