| Writer, born in Vienna, Austria. Due to the untimely death of his parents, he spent part of his childhood in an orphanage, and later recorded this experience in his first novel, Das Waisenhaus (1924). Self-educated, he worked for the Austrian post-office until becoming a freelance writer in 1932. His poetry reveals a strict adherence to a myriad of traditional forms, his mastery of which sometimes disguises the insubstantial nature of the content, and includes Adel und Untergang (1934) and the lyrical Kammermusik (1939) about musical instruments. Much admired during the Third Reich, he later regretted his early support for the regime. He committed suicide in 1945. |
