| Pianist, born near Kraków, Poland. A sensational child prodigy, he played Beethoven with the Berlin Philharmonic at age 10 and made his US debut the following year. After further study with Anton Rubenstein and others, in 1894 he resumed a lifelong career as a virtuoso. After 1898 he largely lived in the USA, and was director of the Curtis Institute (1926–38). |
