| biography:
| Footballer, born in Luque, Paraguay. He began his career as goalkeeper with Sportivo Luqueno when only 15, and made his debut for first division Guarani Asuncion at age 18. After mixed fortunes at San Lorenzo and Spain's Real Saragossa, he returned to Argentina to join first division club Velez Sarsfield, where he gained a string of honours including the Argentinean League Championship (1993, 1995, 1996) and the Copa Libertadores and European/South American (Toyota) Cup in 1994. He was voted World Goalkeeper of the Year in 1995 and 1997. Since 2000 he has played for French club Racing Strasbourg. His international achievements include helping Paraguay qualify for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, where they were beaten in the second round by France, the eventual winners. Despite a somewhat volatile temperament on and off the pitch, he is feted as a folk hero in his native country. |
