| biography:
| Painter and artist, born in Madrid, Spain. As an artist, he confined his subject matter to bulls, genre scenes set in Spain, and urban landscapes, usually in Madrid. He preferred browns and reds, and his draughtsmanship was sombre and stern. Forced into exile because of his views, he became increasingly melancholic and sceptical of human values. Influenced by the tragic themes of Goya, he was also strongly influenced by the Generación del 1898. As a writer, his style is equally sombre, bare, and direct. Madrid: escenas y costumbres (2 vols, 1913–18), La España negra (1920), Madrid callejero (1923), and Dos pueblos de Castilla (1925) were collected in his Obra literaria (1961). |
