| biography:
| Poet, and historical novelist, born in Piedrahita, Ávila, WC Spain. He was a liberal like his friends Quintana, Jovellanos, and Meléndez Valdés. In 1829 he returned from Madrid to Piedrahita where he devoted his time entirely to writing. A costumbrista, the most celebrated examples of his verse are the ode ‘A fray Luis de León’ and the fine sonnet ‘A la laguna de Gredos’, while El capón (1844) is his best historical novel. The sketches of provincial life he collected in Memorias de Piedrahita (1837) and Recuerdos e impresiones (1843) anticipated the essays of Mesonero Romanos. During his lifetime he published Obras poéticas (4 vols, 1834–7) and Obras (2 vols, 1942, one of poetry and one of prose). |
