| Brazilian soldier and president (1985–90), born in Maranhao state, NE Brazil. Elected to the State Assembly at 20, he became governor (1965), and then president of the Social Democratic Party (1970). With the introduction of open elections in 1985, he became deputy to Tancredo Neves, the country's first civilian leader for 21 years, taking up the presidency on Neves' death a few months later. |
