| Writer, born in Azinhaga, Portugal. A former technician, journalist and translator, since 1979 he has worked as a writer, publishing plays, short stories, novels, poems, libretti, diaries, and travelogues. He gained an international reputation in the 1980s with his satirical novel, Memorial do Convento (1982) , later works including O Año da Morte de Ricardo Reis (1984, The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis), O Evangelho Segundo Jesus Christo (1991, The Gospel According to Jesus Christ), and Todos os Nomes (1997, All the Names). He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998. |
