| biography:
| East Timorese activist. He was exiled by the Portuguese in 1970 for his support of the independence movement in East Timor, then returned to take part in the civil war (1972–5), becoming a guerrilla member of Fretilin. He withdrew to Australia following the invasion by Indonesia in 1975, becoming East Timor's international spokesman, and has since sought international support for a peaceful solution. He shared the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1996. |
