| Poet and art historian, born in Málaga, S Spain. He studied in Germany and at Madrid University. He belonged to the poetic generation intermediate between that of '98 and that of '27, his major influence being that of his friend Juan Ramón Jiménez. Before 1937 his poems were delicate, intellectual, and often experimental to the point of surrealism. Collections of this period included Garba (1913), El pasajero (1914), Luchas de pena y alegría y su transfiguración (1915), and Salón sin muros (1935). After emigrating to Mexico in 1937, he wrote denser, more pessimistic poetry, which he illustrated with his own drawings. These later collections included Puerta severa (1941), La noche del verbo (1942), and the anthology of earlier work, La música que llevaba (1949). Voz en vuelo a su cuna (1961) is a posthumous volume with a prefatory poem by Jorge Guillén. Moreno Villa edited Espronceda (1923) and Lope de Rueda (1924) for Clásicos Castellanos. His autobiography is Vida en claro (1944), especially interesting for his years in the Residencia de Estudiantes (1917–37). The respect felt for him by poets of his generation can be seen in Luis Cernuda's essay in Estudios sobre poesía española contemporánea (1957). |
