| biography:
| Basque pre-historian, born in Ataun, Guipúzcoa, N Spain. He had his early education in his mother tongue, but acquired Castilian in the local school. At 14 he entered a seminary, and was ordained priest in 1914. He was appointed to a professorship at the Seminario de Vitoria, where he remained until 1936. His work was interrupted initially by the Spanish Civil War and World War 2, but thereafter he became internationally known for his studies in the anthropology, ethnology, and archaeology of the Basque country.
