| biography:
| Regional poet, born in Frades de la Sierra, Salamanca, W Spain. He achieved instant fame at the Juegos Florales of Salamanca (1901) with the poem ‘el ama’. He wrote dialect poetry in eastern Leonese, erroneously called ‘Extramaduran’ from the title of his second collection, which includes ‘El Cristo benditu’, ‘El embargo’, and ‘Varon’, possibly his most successful regional poems. His books include Castellanas and Extremeñas (both 1902), Campesinas (1904), Nuevas castellanas (1905), the ineffective Religiosas (1906), and volumes of letters Epistolario (1918) and Cartas y poesías inéditas (1919). His verse is prolific, spontaneous, but often careless and unwittingly prosaic to the point of bathos, for he lacked true sensitivity and any great technical ability. But there is no denying his fluency, which won him a wide readership and made his pleasant cuadros de costumbres instantly popular. |
