| President of Mexico (1876–80, 1884–1911), born in Oaxaca, S Mexico. He fought against the French occupation of Mexico (1862–7). Defeated in the presidential election of 1875, he seized power, and served as president for 30 years, until the revolution of Francisco Madero forced him to resign (1911) and flee into exile. His regime did much to stimulate material progress in Mexico. |
