| biography:
| German politician, born in Gerabronn, Germany. A member of the Bündnis 90/Die Grünen party, he became Minister für Umwelt und Energie and Deputy Ministerpräsident in Hessen (1985–7, 1991–4), and speaker of the Bundestagsfraktion of his party (1994–8). In October 1998 he became Vice-Chancellor and foreign minister in the Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD) government. |
