| biography:
| Poet, born in Lorca, Murcia, SE Spain, who gained his nickname from his favoured theme. After the extravagance of the early Romantic poems, his own poetry has a moderate note of quiet tenderness and melancholy in La primavera (1850), El estío (1853), Flores y espinas (1882), and Versos póstumos (1883), and show the influence of German Lieder. He founded the satirical, conservative magazine El Padre Cobos and collected his humorous articles in several books which have stood the test of time as well as his popular novels, such as Deuda del corazón (1872) and La manzana de oro (1873). |
