| biography:
| French poet, born in Santiago de Cuba. The son of a wealthy Spanish coffee plantation owner and a French mother, he studied at the École des Chartres in Paris. A disciple of Leconte de Lisle, he became a leading figure in the Parnassians, publishing a collection of sonnets, Les Trophées (1893) which evoked past civilizations. Les Conquerants paid homage to his conquistador ancestors. In 1894 he was elected to the Académie Française, and in 1901 became librarian of the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal in Paris. His daughter wrote under the name of Gerard d'Houville. |
