| Dancer, choreographer, and teacher, born in Culiacan, W Mexico. With the intention of becoming a painter, he moved to New York City, where he joined the company of Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman (1930–40). He formed the José Limón Company in 1946, and it became the first American modern dance company to tour Europe, later touring the world with great success. The company continued in New York City after his death. |
